As trivial as it may sound for people who live in places where the stars and planets aren't even visible, they've been the basis for world religion since there was world religion, especially high religion (meaning the religion of priesthoods and temples).
You could fill the ocean with the blood that's been spilled according the movements of the Sun, Moon, stars and planets, right up to this very day.
As strange as it may see, this is essentially what it all boils down to. I don't know what the esoteric meaning may be for the high priests of this stellar faiths, but my guess is star magic clearly works for them, otherwise I doubt they'd still be messing with it.
