GALLERY: The Accursed Pukwidgie

My step-brother got married on Sunday in the picaresque harbor of Cohasset, where The Witches of Eastwick was filmed back in the Eighties.

My dad moved to a house right on the harbor after leaving the haunted house - also in Cohasset - that I talked about in The Endless American Midnight. I spent a lot of my youth swimming those waters so it felt like a bit of a homecoming.

The missus and I got to talking to an older gentleman who lived in an apartment upstairs from the banquet hall and was the caretaker of an allegedly-cursed carved totem of a Pukwudgie, a legendary local cryptid. That was the actual creature that I'd encountered while suffering a dangerously-high fever back in 1979, even though I called it a "Leprechaun."

The old fellow never explained the exact nature of the curse.
